Conventions Of A News package

A news package is all the conventions which may be included within a news, the conventions which are  included in the news package are 

• Field Reporters
• Links to Studio
• Mode of address to viewer
• Interviewing experts and witnesses
• Report Structure 
• Actuality Footage   

Field reporters is the person who has great knowledge, is one of the main presenter who broadcasts the show, field reporters reports and tells the audience as to what is happening, they give us more information on the event/ scene taking place and also may include in interviewing other people during the event taking place. A field reporter should think about the costume, level of involvement choice of presenter and the graphics.

Links to studio is whether the news is reported live or at the studio. The links to the studio will use Live or pre recorded filming, the location it has been based, the camera language used within the filming and lastly if there is a package or not within the news.

Mode of address to viewer, is how the new is addressed to the audience, this portrayed through the use of a good presenter, a good presenter reporting a new report should have a good tone of voice that matches the situation of the news. Having a strong and clear accent so the audience understands, language complexity and lastly the audience understanding whether it is fact provider or analysing expert.

 

Interviewing experts and witnesses, is when the news interviews people that were taken part in the situation or the event, so they act as an witness and say what they saw. Interviewing experts is when the news talks to people that are expertise in that field of subject which the news is portraying. When interviewing witnesses and experts the news broadcast should think about the camera techniques, location, status of interviewee, graphics, expert so is the person knowledgeable or part of the story, and witnesses are they at the event or vox popper.
   

Report structure is the structure which the news being reported are followed, so everything is happening step by step making sure the audience understand exactly what is happening. A news structure is followed as firstly sign in and context, archive footage, interviews and vox pops, fact communication, location and where, pieces to camera, sign out and framing story, cutaways and lastly noddies.

           

Actuality Footage is when the news reports actual footage to the audience in order to show proof that a situation or event has happened and showing the audience that whatever has happened is real and true. Actuality footage should be analysed through knowing the source, reason why the actual footage has been used, amount of footage been used, and lastly contextualisation.



In this Crimea Crisis reported on BBC news it shows the convention use of Links to the studio, this news report shows that firstly there is a clear link between the studio and the location, as both presenters in the studio and at the location are shown. In the video you see a clear connection between the two presenters in the studio at 0:46 where see the main presenter in the studio and then the other presenter at the location on screen. I feel that this new report is live as this is known clearly to the audience as you see the presenter at the location and also is shown through the graphics on the left saying "Live" and the time and location to make the viewers believe that this new report is live and that they are not misunderstood. The location which the presenter is at is central london this is known through the background and also the graphics on the left, in the news report video it is shown clearly the location at 0:41. The camera language is done professionally as it is framed very well with many close ups of the presenter in the location talking. In this BBC news report there is no package as there is not much of a variety of camera techniques, most of the shots are close ups of the presenter talking at the location this is because as it is live it is hard to get a variety of shots, because they want to capture everything that is happening live at the location.


This BBC news of the Syria conflict, showing the chemical attacks killing many syrian people. The first convention shown on this bbc new syria conflict is the use of field reporters, the field reporter for this particular video is firstly dressed formally by wearing a suit, the costume makes the audience believe that the field reporter is saying everything real and that the audience are not being mislead. The costume of the field reporter is shown clearly at 2:11 where we meet the field reporter and the costume he is wearing. The level of involvement of the field reporter in the news report is very less, as throughout the video you do not see the presenter, it is only from 2:11-2:20 where we see the field reporter talking about the effects of the Syria conflict affecting the people what the conflict has resulted the people living in Syria being killed or hurt. The choice of presenter used in this news report is a white middle aged class male, who has a strong clear and formal accent. Making sure that the audience understand and can every letter in every word. Lastly the graphics used in this new report is very clear for the audience to understand, as while the field reporter is talking the graphics comes up with the name of the presenter and who he is. In the video this is shown as 2:04 where we see clear graphics of the field reporter his name and what he is. The second convention shown in this news report is the mode of address to the viewer. The tone of voice throughout the news report is very serious tone, to engage the audience as the Syria conflict is very serious and the causes and effects which are happening because of the conflict occurring. Also at the end where the field reporter is introduced the presenter also has a clear deep tone voice which is understood clearly by viewers, as you can hear every letter in every word throughout the news report. The accent is strong and clear, and the english spoken is fluent. The language complexity is formal with many geography terminology used to describe the Syria conflict. Fact provider is clearly shown in the new report as the field reporter is the fact provider as he presents real facts about the Syrian conflicts and the effects which this conflict has had on the syrian people this is shown in the video at 2:13. Analysing experts are also in this news report as we get opinions from people that have witnessed the Syrian conflict. Interviewing experts and witnesses is also another convention which portrayed in this Syrian conflict news report as first the camera techniques used throughout the news report is many close ups and medium close ups, this is to portray the presenters expressions and how he portrays the news. It also makes the audience believe that the presenter is giving real and true information. The location which is presented in the new report is actually showing what is happening at Syria, people suffering and badly injured. This is shown throughout from 0:10-2:05 where it is all archive footage of what is happening in Syria. The graphics used throughout establishes what is happening on screen by having Live written so the audience know it is actual footage or introducing the presenter so we know background knowledge of who he is through the graphics that come on screen in the news report. In the news report there may be questions which can be asked by witnesses or the public during the news report, this may relate to the audience as they may have similar questions to ask the presenter about the situation arising. Expert is a key importance in a news report as this person gives most the information about the situation or event taking taking place, the expert will make the audience learn about the different conflicts arising in different countries and what causes and effects happen due to this. Witnesses are also clearly visible on this new report as a Syrian police officer talks about what the major effects which has been caused by the conflict and the people lying injured or killed by the conflict this is shown in the new report at 1:22. A convention which is very important in a news package is the use of having a report structure being followed in a news broadcast. This is very important as it makes it easier for the audience to understand what the news is about. Firstly in this news report it does not start off with signing in, it straight away shows actual footage in syria which is very dramatic and serious this makes it more engaging to the audience as it is real footage that is being presented. The context is known through the real footage being presented from the beginning of the news report. The Archive footage is seen through most part of this news report from the beginning till nearly to the end, this makes it more interesting for the viewers to feel part of the Syrian conflict and how dramatic and sad it is to see people in discomfort. Fact communication is done through the voice over n most segments in the news report, this is much better than having a presenter on screen as we get to see real footage of Syria and how it has affected people leaving their family killed or injured. Pieces to camera is not very frequently used it only at 2:11-2:20 where we see the presenter looking into the camera and speaking this engages the audience as it makes them feel as though the presenter is directly talking to them. Sign out is shown in the news report as the graphics introduces the presenter by his name and who he is this is shown in the news report at 2:13. Framing story is portrayed clearly for the viewers to understand it end the news showing actual footage again and the predictions which they feel will take place in Syria now after the conflict. Actuality footage is the main segment which taken up by this news report the source that is being presented to viewers is the Syrian conflict, the reason of using it is to show what the syrian people are suffering being badly injured or killed or even being tied up. Most of this news report was actuality footage and this engaged the audience as gripped the audience through the real footage being presented to them and also making it very dramatic and serious. And lastly makes the audience believe that this is actually happening in Syria, it is real and is more engaging for the audience to watch.
